Season 1, Episode 3: "The Glassy Planet"

by Matthew D. Miller

Bookmark Our story begins with a mirror. Said mirror was found hundreds of years before the map makers Rusty, Tonya, and Bear were even born. It was found by Trenton Pennywonk. Yes, you would be correct in assuming Trenton is related to Temple Pennywonk whose treasure Captain Margay entered the Stellar Graveyard to find. Trenton was Temple's great17 grandfather, and he was a pirate who sailed the High Seas. Little did Margay know the treasure she sought was not the kind of treasure you want to find.

Bookmark Trenton soon discovered that the mirror possessed a strange and most undesirable power. When Trenton looked into the eyes of his reflection, the reflection came to life and stepped out of the mirror. Except for being a pirate, Trenton was a pretty nice guy. His reflection was not. Being a reflection, he was not a perfect copy of Trenton but rather a reflection of one aspect of him. In this case, it happened to be his avarice. And being a mischievous reflection, he looked into the mirror until there were several Trentons.

Bookmark Trenton resolved that the mirror could not stay on earth, but in the 1700s, he had no way of carrying through with his resolution. The mirror was passed down through the family with precise instructions to never look into it and that the first family member capable would hide the mirror among the stars. Thus, Temple hid it on a planet in the Stellar Graveyard covered with glassy mountains where he was sure it could never be found. The planet was like the universe's largest fun house...without the fun. He hid it on...

Bookmark "The Glassy Planet"

Bookmark "...which is the colloquial name for Planet SiO2, the only known planet with a glass core," explained the female voice of the pirate ship's Autopilot.

Bookmark "When did that infernal Autopilot start being able to follow us outside the ship?" Rusty demanded.

Bookmark "I heard that," the Autopilot replied.

Bookmark "That was me," Darcy confessed. "I hooked her speech synthesizer to the exterior PA system. But Johnson told me to."

Bookmark "You're undoing it as soon as we get back," Rusty barked.

Bookmark "This planet is a girl's dream come true," Tonya cooed. "What's that? A zit! This planet is a girl's worst nightmare."

Bookmark "I thought you just said this planet was a dream come true," Darcy prompted.

Bookmark "Don't try to understand women, Darcy," Rusty advised. "Trust me. Your life will be much simpler that way."

Bookmark Jagged glass jutted out of the planet just a couple of feet in some places and towered as tall as mountains in others. It was everywhere forming a complex maze. Tonya was admiring her reflection in a glassy mirror. The pirate ship lay atop shards of broken glass. Several yards from the pirate ship, lying in a similar pile of shards, sat an empty escape pod bearing a skull and cross bones.

Bookmark The pirate ship led by map maker Rusty Wallace had been scouring the Stellar Graveyard for just such an escape pod. It was the escape pod Captain Margay used to venture into the Stellar Graveyard in search of Pennywonk's treasure. Too scared to come after her on their own, Pirate Dark Star and Darcy kidnapped Rusty and his map making crew from Pluto a couple months ago.

Bookmark Pirate Dark Star marched down the ship's ramp with a coil of rope over one shoulder, a pick over the other, a heavy backpack, a brown fedora, and sunglasses. "Those sunglasses so don't go with that hat," Tonya quipped.

Bookmark "They do so," Dark Star quipped back.

Bookmark "Both of you, quiet!" Rusty shouted. "We only have three hours until sunset. We will split into teams, so we can cover more area. When you see the sun starting to go down, head back to the ship whether you've found Margay or not. Bear, you're with me."

Bookmark Pointing at Rusty's ferret, Bear asked, "Is Also coming too?"

Bookmark "Forgot you were scared of Also. That's not going to work. Dark Star, you and me together."

Bookmark Captain Spectacular volunteered, "I will accompany the young lady to ensure her safety."

Bookmark "Not in that cape you aren't," Tonya countered.

Bookmark "Then you and Bear can search together, Spectacular," Rusty instructed. "He needs more protecting than Tonya anyhow. That leaves Darcy and Tonya."

Bookmark "I haven't always been a pirate," Dark Star shared with Rusty as he struggled under his heavy load. "I actually started out as an insurance agent. Are you listening?"

Bookmark "Hmmm?" Rusty mumbled. "Oh, yes. You were an accountant. Go on."

Bookmark "There's no reason for me to continue if you're not even listening."

Bookmark "Please go on," Tonya piped. She was a few feet behind and jogged to catch up. "I'm listening."

Bookmark Rusty turned and asked, "Where did you come from? Where's Darcy?"

Bookmark "I don't know."

Bookmark Also started frantically clucking at Tonya. Tonya backed away as if she was scared of the little ferret "Stop that, Also!" Rusty ordered. "You know Tonya."

Bookmark Dark Star asked her, "Weren't you supposed to be on a team with Darcy?"

Bookmark "Well, I lost track of him and got scared. Then I heard you guys. Please let me stay with you. This planet is creepy."

Bookmark "Maybe he's with Bear and Spectacular," Dark Star offered. "Well, being an insurance agent and being a pirate are not as different as you might think."

Bookmark "I don't know if I could do either," Tonya said.

Bookmark "Being a pirate is not that hard," Dark Star continued. "Not that being an insurance agent is that hard either, but it's not easy. For that matter, it's not easy being a pirate...nor is it hard..."

Bookmark Bear was the first to break the awkward silence between him and Captain Spectacular. "So...uh...Spectacular, how long have you been a super hero defending against accidental excursions into the Stellar Graveyard, which, by the way, I think is an extremely noble cause?"

Bookmark "You can just call me Oscar. I was coming up on my twenty-fifth anniversary there on the second Outer Lying World. I was a super hero long before that though. The outpost was kind of like a retirement gig. I spent thirty years super heroing on earth and then did stints of a few years on both the moon and Mars."

Bookmark "I hope it's not rude me asking," Bear pried, "but how old are you? It's just that you don't look old enough to retire."

Bookmark "Ninety-two. Super heroes age differently than normal people. I feel as fit as a fifty-year-old."

Bookmark "In those tights," came Tonya's voice, "you look as fit as my grandma." The team spun around to see Tonya rounding the corner.

Bookmark "I thought you were with Darcy," Oscar prodded. "Something about not being worthy of a man with a cape."

Bookmark "I don't want to be here any more than you want me to be, Cape Man, but Darcy ran off without me," Tonya retorted.

Bookmark "It's Captain Spectacular, or even Oscar Bradley will work," Oscar asserted.

Bookmark Bear asked, "About that: aren't super heroes supposed to have secret identities?"

Bookmark "I tried keeping one up when I was younger. I just don't see the point any more."

Bookmark "It's not like he's a real super hero," Tonya jibed. "I'm surprised you're not scared of super heroes, Bear."

Bookmark "What's got into you?" Bear protested. "Did you start calling Darcy names too and chase him off? Oscar's a nice guy. Leave him alone."

Bookmark "That's all I am," Oscar bemoaned. "A nice guy. While other super heroes are saving the universe, what am I doing? Keeping people from entering the Stellar Graveyard, and I even failed at that."

Bookmark Bear glared at Tonya and then turned to Oscar. "Being with you makes me not as scared."

Bookmark "Really?" Oscar raised his head. "You know what we're going to do? Before we leave this planet, we're going to cure you of all your fears, Bear!"

Bookmark "Oh, brother!" Tonya groaned.

Bookmark "I'm really glad I was teamed up with you." Tonya wrapped her arms around Darcy's right arm. "Just you and me exploring a strange planet. It's going to be quite an adventure!"

Bookmark "I'm glad I was teamed with you too, I guess."

Bookmark "You guess?" Tonya giggled. "You're cute when you're on a mission."

Bookmark "We haven't even started the mission yet."

Bookmark "We haven't, have we?" Tonya continued to giggle. "What are we supposed to be doing again?"

Bookmark "We're searching for Captain Margay."

Bookmark "Searching for her is going to give us plenty of time to get to know each other better." Tonya leaned her head against Darcy's shoulder.

Bookmark Darcy stepped to the left and replied, "You're making me feel a bit uncomfortable."

Bookmark Tonya thought she had seen something in her teeth. As soon as Rusty finished his speech, she turned back to the mirror. She sighed. False alarm. She had been teamed with Darcy. That wouldn't be too bad.

Bookmark "Darcy, we probably should get going."

Bookmark She turned away from the mirror. Where was Darcy? Where was everybody?

Bookmark "Darcy, Darcy?"

Bookmark "I agree. Let's get going," came a voice in the direction of the mirror.

Bookmark Tonya turned back to the mirror. "You're not Darcy."

Bookmark "Oh, then who am I?" the voice asked.

Bookmark "Well, you're me, but that's impossible."

Bookmark "Oh, well. Let's go. This planet looks fun," the other Tonya said gleefully.

Bookmark "No, I think we should wait here until Cap and the others return," Tonya told herself.

Bookmark "You can wait here, but I'm going exploring." With that, the other Tonya walked off into a cluster of glassy ridges.

Bookmark "Hey, you. Hey...me!" shouted Tonya. "Aw, shucks!" And with that, Tonya went running after the other Tonya.

Bookmark "It was T-Ball that did it. It was T-Ball that made me become a pirate," Dark Star reminisced. "All those cruel kids making fun of my swing. It scarred me for life. It made me who I am today. That and my mom. Who names their kid Bob?"

Bookmark "It sounds absolutely terrifying," Tonya cried.

Bookmark "I'll admit Bob is pretty bad, but I wouldn't go as far as terrifying," Bob defended.

Bookmark "No, I like 'Bob.' It sounds less scary than 'Dark Star.' I was imagining all those cruel kids. I had to stop imagining, because it was giving me the..." Tonya stopped suddenly. "Did you hear that?"

Bookmark Rusty froze and surveyed the area. A woman with tattered clothes barely hanging on sped into the clearing. She wildly screamed, "Ruuuuunnnnnnnnnn!"

Bookmark "Captain?" Dark Star called.

Bookmark "Yes," Rusty replied.

Bookmark "No, it's Captain Margay," Dark Star explained.

Bookmark Rusty intently looked at the wild woman for a few moments. "Sandy?"

Bookmark "Rusty?" she asked back.

Bookmark "You two know each other?" Dark Star puzzled.

Bookmark "Why are we supposed to be running?" Tonya asked.

Bookmark As if in answer to her questions, a high-pitched screech came from above. They looked up to see a giant flying rat soaring towards them. They ran.

Bookmark "Follow me," Margay shouted. "I know somewhere we can hid not far from here."

Bookmark Tonya cowered down, not moving. Rusty hoisted her on his back and chased after the fleeing Margay and Dark Star.

Bookmark "This is a waste of time," Tonya whined. Then something in the distance seemed to catch Tonya's attention. "I gotta go, guys." With that, she dashed off.

Bookmark "Is it just me or is Tonya acting unusual today?" Oscar asked. Bear mumbled something unintelligible in reply. "Don't look behind you, Bear," Oscar instructed.

Bookmark Sniff, sniff! "There's a giant rat behind you," Oscar calmly said. "Don't move!"

Bookmark "I...I can't move," Bear trembled.

Bookmark "Don't worry. I'm a super hero. I'll get us out of this." Oscar flared his cape and leaped through the air. When he looked back up at Bear, he stammered, "I think things just got worse."

Bookmark "Worse?" Bear gulped.

Bookmark "Actually now that I think about it, it makes sense. If the Stellar Graveyard has giant flying rats, why wouldn't it have giant flying cats? And that kitty looks ready to pounce."

Bookmark "Darcy, what ya doing?" Tonya asked.

Bookmark "We're going back to the ship," Darcy explained. "That's what we're doing."

Bookmark "I don't want to go back to the ship yet. I want to stay out here with you."

Bookmark "No, we're going back. This planet is effecting you in some way, and I think it would be best for you if we returned to the ship."

Bookmark "Oooh," Tonya giggled. "Are we going back to your room?"

Bookmark "Stop it!" Darcy plopped down on a stumpy chunk of smooth glass. "Stop it right now, Tonya. What's going on?"

Bookmark Tonya plopped down on Darcy's lap and batted her eyelashes. "What do you mean, Darcy Farcy?"

Bookmark "I like you. I like you a lot, Tonya. I know the whole kidnapping thing probably wasn't the best way to start off, but it was all Bob's idea. Promise. And, well, I don't think whatever's happening right now is real. Something's not right."

Bookmark "Do you mean that?" Tonya asked. Well, it sounded like Tonya, but she was sitting on Darcy's lap, and she hadn't said a thing. Tonya stepped into view. Tonya was sitting on his lap, but she was also standing a few feet from him. "Do you mean that?" the standing Tonya asked again.

Bookmark Darcy jumped up knocking the sitting Tonya out of his lap. He took a few steps distancing himself from the two Tonyas. "What's going on? Am I dreaming?"

Bookmark "I wish," Tonya groaned. Darcy blinked trying to assimilate the sight before him--two Tonyas! It was the Tonya who just appeared a few moments ago who spoke. "Now you see what I've been dealing with," she continued. She turned her head and called, "Hey, you, get over here! I haven't quite figured out what to call her. What are you doing? Get over here!"

Bookmark "I was climbing a glass cliff. There are so many interesting things to see on this magnificent planet." It was Tonya who spoke but a third Tonya who had just emerged from behind a wall of jagged glass.

Bookmark The Tonya who had been Darcy's teammate crossed her arms and pouted, "I liked it better when it was just you and me, Darcy. Can we go now?"

Bookmark Darcy replied: "You're coming back to the ship with me. You're all coming back to the ship with me. It'll be dark soon, and then everybody else will be returning. Rusty or Bob will know what to do."

Bookmark Sandy Margay sat inside a glass cavern. The cavern had a combination of survival gear and items fashioned out of glass strewn about that made it appear someone had been living there for a few months. Rusty, Dark Star, and Tonya stood just within the narrow entrance. The glass walls were so thick and distorted that nothing more than a faint hint of motion could be detected through them, and the entrance was too narrow for the giant rats to follow. "Don't be timid. Come on in," Sandy gestured. "Bob, Rusty, introduce me to your friend."

Bookmark The three hesitantly stepped further into the cavern. "Captain Margay, you don't know how good it is to see you," Dark Star said. "We never could have made it without Captain Wallace. Darcy and I tried really hard though."

Bookmark "I'm sure you did. I was quite surprised to see Rusty--especially knowing your history with the Stellar Graveyard," Sandy replied.

Bookmark "To be honest, I was surprised to see you. Alive. The Stellar Graveyard is enough to drive a man crazy in a month," Rusty noted and then asked, "How have you survived for six months?"

Bookmark "I'm not a man, now, am I? And who is this," Sandy asked pointing at Tonya.

Bookmark Tonya hid behind Rusty. He answered for her, "This is Tonya. She's a member of the mapping crew I took out this time. Quite an able member of my crew, but she hasn't been herself on this planet."

Bookmark "So did you find it? Did you find Pennywonk's treasure?" Dark Star eagerly jumped in.

Bookmark "I found it alright. There wasn't much to find."

Bookmark "How rich are we?" Dark Star asked. "I told Rusty we'd share with him. Hope you don't mind."

Bookmark "Rusty can have it all if he'd like." Sandy tossed a small wooden box in front of the group. The lid flipped open. "Two baseball cards and this." She pulled a yellowed parchment from the box. "This blank piece of paper."

Bookmark Dark Star picked up one of the baseball cards and flipped it around a couple of times. "Can I keep this one, Captain Wallace?" Rusty nodded. Dark Star opened his backpack. As he was placing the baseball card inside, he exclaimed, "I have an idea!" He pulled a Sherlock's Little Sleuth's Secret Message Decoder Kit from his bag. "Maybe that paper isn't blank. Let me see it."

Bookmark "Bear, when I say 'now,' I want you to run," Oscar instructed.

Bookmark Bear stood frozen. The giant rat inched closer until its whiskers were almost brushing up against him. Oscar intensely watched a giant cat crouched in a pouncing position just a few yards away.

Bookmark The instant the cat sprung, Oscar shouted, "Now!" The cat pinned the rat to the ground, but the rat was strong and fought back. Bear didn't budge. The rat succeeded in shoving the cat off. It rolled into a nearby column of glass. "Now, Bear, now!" Oscar shouted. The column toppled barely missing Bear. For the first time, he looked behind himself. At the sight of the two monstrous creatures, he dashed off with Oscar into the maze of crystalline cliffs.

Bookmark Right in front of them stood another giant rat. Bear spun around. It was a reflection. Oscar noticed the distortion caused by the glass and grabbed Bear. "No, keep moving forward." He yanked Bear forward just in time for the rat's jaws to miss his arm. The rat pursued--it's fat body breaking glass as it went along. Shards rained down on the fleeing duo.

Bookmark There was what looked like a cavern entrance up ahead. Rusty appeared in the entrance. "Bear, Oscar, hurry. The flying rats can't get inside."

Bookmark The two tumbled inside followed by the ugly head of the pursuing rodent. "It's not the rats I'm worried about," Oscar panted. The rat went flying making a terrible screech. It's head was replaced by a furry paw that shot into the cavern, claws digging into the ground. Bear and Oscar scrambled further back, but one of the sharp claws pinned Oscar's cape. Rusty grabbed one of his arms while Sandy grabbed the other. The paw flew backwards ripping a huge piece of the cape off.

Bookmark The whole cave shook as an enormous body slammed into the outside. A glass chunk fell between Dark Star's legs. He jumped up and joined Tonya cowering near the back. "They usually aren't this aggressive," Sandy shouted above the din. "Something strange is going on."

Bookmark Love-sick Tonya sat on the ship's ramp pouting. Happy Tonya danced and spun around. Darcy and the remaining Tonya leaned against the ship. "So you're the real Tonya?" he asked. "And the rest of," he paused to think of the right word, "them came out of that mirror?"

Bookmark Before that Tonya could answer, the other Tonya stopped spinning and replied, "Are all humans this stupid? Yes, we came out of the mirror. Out of the mirror, out of the mirror, out of the mirror, we came! And it feels so good to be out!" She skipped back over to the mirror Tonya had been admiring herself in after they landed. She moved her face so close that her nose was touching the mirror. Three more Tonyas stepped out.

Bookmark The real Tonya charged the mirror. Back to the mirror, she blocked it with her body. "No more! This stops right now!"

Bookmark The other Tonya tossed her to the ground. "No, honey, it doesn't."

Bookmark Darcy came running, but with a snap of the fingers, the other Tonya had the three new reflections grab him. "You're not Tonya at all," he growled.

Bookmark The maniacal Tonya sauntered over to the restrained Darcy. "You aren't as dull as you look," she said pressing her index finger against his forehead. "That stupid Trenton Pennywonk thought I was his avarice. The man didn't have an evil bone in his body. There was nothing of him in me. I've been in that mirror so long I don't remember who--or even if--I was before. You can call me Mirror."

Bookmark "Don't you mean Temple Pennywonk?" Darcy questioned.

Bookmark "I don't know this Temple Pennywonk," Mirror proclaimed. She leaned in closer until her face was almost touching Darcy's. "But once I get my hands on that Trenton, he'll be sorry he ever put me back in the mirror." She gestured toward the real Tonya and instructed the reflections, "Tie these two up and put them on the ship where they'll be out of our way. We've got a planet to take over."

Bookmark The cavern continued to shake as an undetermined number of giant rats wrestled flying cats outside. The air inside the cavern had grown frigid. "A storm is coming," Sandy explained. "I can feel it in the air."

Bookmark Rusty looked up and noticed Tonya walking outside. "Tonya, it's not safe out there. Get back in here!" It was too late. She had already disappeared outside. Everything grew eerily quiet.

Bookmark Dark Star broke the silence, "It's finished! My kit worked. There is a message on this parchment."

Bookmark Tonya reappeared at the entrance. Something was different. She laughed.

Bookmark "Tonya, get back in here," Rusty shouted.

Bookmark "You're in no place to be giving me orders. I already have your friend that looks like me and the fat one tied up in that poor excuse for a ship you flew here in. From now on, I'm the boss, and you're going to call me Mirror. If you don't believe me, come look."

Bookmark Rusty peered outside. "Come see this," he said to the group huddled at the rear of the cavern. Then he turned to Mirror and continued, "What do you want?"

Bookmark The group let out a collective gasp. The cavern was surrounded by--no, the planet was covered with--Tonyas. Maybe hundreds. Possibly thousands. Mirror had them bound and left in the cavern. As she was leaving, she said, "It is quite simple, Mr. Wallace. I want everything."

Bookmark After Mirror was safely outside of hearing distance, Oscar asked, "Dark Star, you said you had decoded the message. What did it say?"

Bookmark "What is this Dark Star business?" Sandy questioned.

Bookmark "Captain Wallace's map makers didn't think Bob was a piratey enough of a name," Dark Star explained.

Bookmark "I've always thought Bob wasn't piratey enough," Sandy agreed. "Okay, Dark Star, what did the message say?"

Bookmark "It was a message from an ancestor of Temple Pennywonk. Trenton said he found a mirror. Here I go again. Trenton Pennywonk is the ancestor. I always mess up on stories. He found a mirror that, well, it does what's happened to Tonya. More importantly, it said there is a way to put them all back in the mirror."

Bookmark After a long pause, Bear finally asked, "How?"

Bookmark "Oh, of course, yes, you'd want to know how. It said the mirror must be used to capture the reflection of a star. Then command the star's reflection to recapture the prisoner."

Bookmark "It's almost night," Sandy excitedly said. "Don't you keep a communicator in your backpack, Bob, I mean, Dark Star?"

Bookmark "I do, but my bag is way over there."

Bookmark The group sat in a circle. Their hands were tied behind them, but all of their feet had been tied together. "If we move as a group," Rusty instructed, "we can make it to the bag."

Bookmark The group slowly made progress. It was Oscar who ended up closest to the backpack. "Which pocket is it in?" he asked.

Bookmark "The front one," Dark Star replied. Oscar used his fingers to grasp the zipper and tug. "No, the other front one." He struggled a bit until he was able to grasp the lower zipper. A couple of tugs and the pocket opened. He twisted his body and lifted the communicator out with his mouth. With a fling of his head, he tossed it into Dark Star's lap.

Bookmark Dark Star picked up the communicator with his mouth and dropped it in Rusty's hands. He twisted and leaned down where he could speak into it and asked, "Captain Wallace, can you push the button on the side for me?"

Bookmark Darcy and Tonya were tied back to back in the galley. The intercom came to life with a burst of static. "Darcy, if you can hear me, please respond," the intercom blared.

Bookmark "Pirate Dark Star, is that you?" he responded.

Bookmark "What did you just call me?" Dark Star queried.

Bookmark "Never mind. But Tonya..." Darcy began.

Bookmark "It's okay, Darcy. We know all about it. Is Tonya there with you now?"

Bookmark "Yes, I am," Tonya answered for herself.

Bookmark "Good," Dark Star continued. "Do you know what mirror started all of this?"

Bookmark "Yes, we saw the leader using it to...uh...make more of me."

Bookmark "The mirror belonged to Trenton Pennywonk, an ancestor of Temple Pennywonk," Dark Star briefly explained.

Bookmark "The leader, the one calling herself Mirror, mentioned Trenton," inserted Darcy. "I didn't know who she was talking about."

Bookmark "If you can capture the light of a star in the mirror," Dark Star continued, "you can command the star to recapture this Mirror person."

Bookmark "We're tied up in the galley right now. How are we going to get to the mirror?" Darcy pondered.

Bookmark "I wish we could help you there. The rest of us are tied up in a cavern right now," Dark Star said.

Bookmark "But I might be able to help," the ship's Autopilot announced.

Bookmark "How can you help?" asked Tonya. "You're just an Autopilot."

Bookmark "I told you we girls have to stick together," the Autopilot reminded. "Trust me, darling."

Bookmark A panel across the galley slid open. A barrel extended. A laser shot across the room. Both Darcy and Tonya screamed and raised their hands to cover their face. After the initial shock subsided, they realized what they had just done: they had raised their hands to cover their face--their hands that had just been tied behind their back. Charred rope hung limply around their wrists.

Bookmark Darcy and Tonya quietly crept outside. It was just dark enough that the first stars were starting to come out. Love-sick Tonya seemed to be the only reflection around, and she was so caught up in her moping that she didn't notice them. Tonya jerked the mirror from the ground. Being careful to avoid eye contact with the mirror, she tilted it until she saw the glint of a star reflected in it. "I'm not exactly sure how to do this, but here goes nothing: Star light, star bright..."

Bookmark A shrill "Nooooo..." started across the planet but ended coming from love-sick Tonya, "...ooooo! I'm not going back in there." She shoved Darcy to the side and grabbed the mirror from Tonya. Mirror flung the mystical mirror hundreds of feet shattering it and screamed, "I've had it. Kill them. Kill them all!"

Bookmark At this very moment, Oscar finally freed himself from his ropes. He'd been grinding the ropes binding his hand against the edge of Dark Star's pick. Once his hands were free, he loosed his feet. He helped everyone else get untied, and then he was off. Flying approximately twenty feet at a time, he bounded to the pirate ship.

Bookmark "I tried," cried Tonya pointing at the shattered mess.

Bookmark Oscar bounded a few more times until he reached the broken mirror. He picked up one of the bigger shards and angled it towards the sky. He looked up to see the sky filled with clouds blocking out even the brightest stars. Mirror cackled, "It's over. I've won."

Bookmark "No, you haven't. I can fly above the cloud cover," Oscar shouted back.

Bookmark "I thought you could only fly about twenty feet. Those clouds must be hundreds of feet up," Tonya pointed out.

Bookmark "Flying that high won't be a problem. I just can't fly back down from that height," he explained.

Bookmark "What will you do then?" Tonya asked.

Bookmark "I'll fall."

Bookmark "That'll kill you."

Bookmark "If I don't, you'll all die."

Bookmark Arm outstretched, Oscar soared into the clouds. "Noooo..." Tonya wailed. Bright beams of light shot down enveloping Mirror and her dastardly reflections. Mirror joined Tonya wailing, "Noooo..." Soon they were both joined by a deafening chorus of wails from the thousands of reflections growing fainter by the second. When Tonya's hoarse cry came to an end, the planet was silent.

Bookmark A lone figure, dressed in white, torn cape fluttering in the air, fell from the clouds. What were only seconds seemed like minutes. A sickening thud resounded throughout the planet. The Stellar Graveyard had claimed another life.

Bookmark Tonya rushed toward the still body. Darcy tried to hold her back, but she broke his grip and kept running. She fell on her knees beside Oscar. He lie on his back, arms outstretched, eyes closed. His hand still gripped the broken shard of glass. Dried blood covered where the sharp edges had dug into his skin.

Bookmark A few minutes later Tonya felt a hand on her shoulder. She looked up to see Rusty. He gently said, "Sandy's got a morgue on her ship. We'll bring him back to earth and make sure he gets a hero's funeral. I'll understand if you don't want to continue the mission after that."

Bookmark "I want to continue," Bear said. "I want to continue for Oscar. He was helping me get rid of my fears. In his memory, I'm going to try and be braver. Maybe one day I'll be as brave as he was."

Bookmark "Yes," Tonya said. "I want to continue too. Oscar would have wanted it."
